Scope note
Stone quarried in the vicinity of the Isle of Purbeck peninsula, Dorset, England; used primarily as a building stone. It is actually a hard semi-metamorphosed limestone formed from the shells of snails. Given that the stone is hard enough to take a fine polish it is called "Purbeck marble," even though it is not fully metamophosed marble.
